Free Crochet Pattern – Linen Stitch Dishcloth
It’s the middle of summer here. And it is hot. Do you know what does not mix with such high heat? Knitting. And Crocheting. Sitting under the weight and added layer of fabric is the last thing I want to do in the middle of summer. We do not have air conditioning, which makes things a bit more challenging when it comes to knitting and crocheting in the summer. So, this is a great time to share this Free Crochet Pattern, for a Linen Stitch Dishcloth.
Dishcloths as Summer Projects
Dishcloths are great summer projects. They work up quickly, are easy, and are very useful. I’ve been on a bit of a dishcloth kick lately. So much, that I have a stack for gift-giving all ready to go! These dishcloths, made of 100% cotton yarn are great for in the kitchen wiping up spills and can also be used in the bathroom for personal care as well.
Why Linen Stitch?
Have you heard of linen stitch before? This stitch also goes by other names – Moss, Granite, Linen, and Woven are all common names for this same stitch. The final texture makes this fabric look woven and is very sturdy. It’s a great stitch for washcloths as it is not too open of a fabric, but also is not too dense. Also, there are some variations to this stitch that can make a much denser fabric, which would be better-suited for potholders.
The linen stitch is a timeless, classic stitch without any unnecessary fuss. There is beauty in simple patterns. Plus, they are a great way to work your favourite hobby all year round.
About The Linen Stitch Dishcloth Pattern
This Linen Stitch Dishcloth is so quick to make. It is easy to make multiple in a single day. Recently, I have gifted quite a few as hostess and housewarming gifts. These would be excellent stocking stuffers come Christmas time (which is right around the corner, by the way).

Use your favourite 100% cotton yarn and the recommended hook
Chain 36
Row 1: Sc in 4th chain from the hook, (*ch 1, skip a chain, SC in the next stitch); repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn
Row 2: sc in ch1 space, ch1. Repeat across.
Repeat row 2 until desired height.
Finishing: for a polished look, feel free to add a single crochet border around the perimeter of the dishcloth. Weave in ends.
Personally, I like to leave the edges raw. This linen stitch pattern creates beautiful scalloped edges along the sides. So, I think they’re beautiful as is. However, an argument can be made for either finishing technique. One of the best things about knitting and crochet is the personalization. Border, no border, start with a bigger or smaller foundation chain, fewer or more rows. The options are just about endless.
