I’m so excited to share how to Crochet a Ruffled Scrunchie with this Free Pattern. Spring is coming! That means it is almost time to ditch the hats and other winter gear in favour of lighter fabrics and cute accessories. One of my favourite ways to accessorize is with my hair. Cue: Scrunchies.

Scrunchies are currently fashionable pieces to add to your wardrobe. They add ruffle, frill colour and texture to any outfit. Whether you’re in your athleisure era or funky wardrobe era, these are great for anyone. Plus, with the abundance of choice in yarns, scrunchies are easily customizable to suit any aesthetic.
Potential Uses
Make a scrunchie in your favourite colour, sports team colours, rainbow, bridal party colours, group theme colours… the possibilities are endless.
Add them to a gift basket filled with wellness and self-care items. Include them in a bridesmaid box in your wedding colours for each bridesmaid to wear when getting ready. Give one as a gift to Mom this Mother’s Day!
How to Crochet a Ruffle Scrunchie with this Free Pattern
Tools Needed
Hair Elastic, any brand
Velvet yarn for this project, I’m using Bernat Velvet (Bulky Weight)
Crochet Hook in recommended size I use size K to make scrunchies
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Abbreviations
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch
Start by making a standing single crochet onto the elastic
Round 1: Make 39 additional sc into the elastic. Join with sl st
Round 2: ch 3, 1 dc into the same stitch as sl st from the previous round. Make 2 dc in each stitch around. Join with sl st into the top of ch 3.
Round 3: ch 3, 2 dc into the same stitch. 3dc in each stitch around. Join with sl st into the top of ch 3.
Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends using a tapestry needle.
Customization Options:
Stripes: Create a striped scrunchie by changing colours after each round
Colour pop: Add a contrasting pop of colour by adding a final round of single crochet in the colour of your choice
Checkerboarding: created by alternating between two colours every few stitches, then on each subsequent row, ensuring the opposite colours are worked on top of each other
