Why I Started Knitting Again After 10 Years
Oh boy, I started knitting again!
I have recently, once again, picked up a pair of knitting needles. After an over-ten-year hiatus, I made the decision to start knitting again. Truth be told, I stopped knitting not long after I started crocheting. I liked how quickly my crochet projects worked up. The versatility and variety of different stitches seemed limitless.
And, honestly, knitting often hurt my hands. I’ve always felt like my hands were too big to properly hold the needles and work away at a pattern for any length of time. I would have to take frequent, sometimes lengthy breaks to rest my hands, wrists and fingers.
Also, I had started knitting before the internet really existed. There were no tutorials, or many references easily available online. So, all I really knew of were stockinette and garter stitch. At the time, these seemed boring compared to the patterns I could find for crochet.
Let me tell you, it felt good to work a knitting pattern.
Why I Started Knitting Again
Why you might ask? Well, I treated myself to an absolutely luxurious yarn. Malabrigo Rios in Arco Iris to be exact.
This yarn. I can not say enough good things about it. Soft, smooth, easily workable. The colours! I had never worked with any Malabrigo yarns before. Now, I can easily say it has become one of my favourites and I’m hooked. Seriously, if you haven’t worked with Malabrigo yet, I highly recommend you do.
Because this yarn was more of a pricey item for me, I wanted to be able to do something a little more special with it and was having a challenging time choosing a crochet pattern. My problem is that crochet often uses far more yarn than knitting. Simply because of how the stitches are worked.
This yarn felt so splendid I did not want to work a lot of it away hiding in crochet stitches.
I also wanted to try something a little more challenging. The quality of the yarn suggested I would have an easier time as it would be more forgiving as I went.
What I Knit After 10 Years
With the special nature of the yarn, I decided I would like to make something for my daughter with it.
I eventually landed on a cardigan and found this pattern for Cascade Yarns Arches Baby Cardigan designed by Diane Zangl.
How great does this look? The way the colours blend themselves into the arches within the pattern is just so fascinating and interesting.
I can hardly wait for cooler weather for my daughter to wear this beauty.

Was it worth it?
YES. A hundred times yes. I absolutely love the finished product. I’ve already gushed enough about the yarn (although I could say more) but the pattern was also easy to follow. Especially given I had not picked up a pair of knitting needles in over 10 years.
Even then, I would have classified myself as a beginner knitter.
The Arches cardigan pattern was a great reintroduction to knitting. Between the pattern and yarn choice, this little cardigan came out so interestingly beautiful.
I’m now looking forward to knitting more things.
Since completing this pattern, I’ve tried my hand at a knit cable hat, and am currently working away on a garter stitch shawl.
