Great First Makes When Learning to Crochet
Getting started in crochet is fairly simple once you have the basic supplies. Of course, some items are much easier to make. I wouldn’t recommend starting with a complicated item full of colour changes. But, there are many great simple first makes when learning to crochet. These items also make great gifts!

Dishcloths
Dishcloths are an optimal choice when first learning to crochet because they’re simple squares. Dish (and wash) cloths are best when made out of soft cotton yarn. They can be worked up using almost any stitch. These are a great opportunity to play around and test different stitches to learn how they transform into a finished product.
Pot Holders
Pot Holders are similar to dishcloths, best when worked in cotton. These are made quite thick to absorb the heat from pots so not to ruin counter tops. While most often, these are square, they can also be made into any shape to suit any decor.
Scarves
Scarves are great for beginners because it starts to get a new crocheter used to working bigger projects. Whether a basic rectangle, triangular shawl, or infinity scarf worked in the round. Scarves can be made using any yarn to suit any weather and have limitless variation options.
Granny Squares
Working in the round can be tricky. Granny squares are an easy introduction to help you learn where to place new stitches, as well as how to increase each subsequent round. Also great for colour changes, granny squares can be made in abundance and stitched together to form larger projects, from sweaters to bags and blankets.
Face Scrubbies
The projects until now have been mostly square or rectangular. While face scrubbies can follow this, they are most often worked in circular rounds. Best when made in soft cotton, they are easy for beginners to practice working in the round.

Hats
Hats are often worked in a circular pattern similar to face scrubbies. This can be very tricky for newer crochet hobbyists, as the joins get finicky if not worked a certain way. Hats are also good for testing stitches and can be made in any size.
Small projects are best when learning to crochet. These basic projects are all customizable to suit different tastes and aesthetics. They also make great gifts!
